The Bible and Painting
Symposium at the Barber Institute of Fine Arts
University of Birmingham
Over sixty participants attended this symposium at the Barber Institute in Birmingham on 13 May 2006. Papers in the Lecture Theatre by Nicholas Davey, John Harvey and Richard Verdi were complemented by a series of gallery talks in the afternoon. The afternoon talks focussed on several biblical paintings in the gallery and encouraged participants to develop their own understanding and interpretation of the artworks.
The Symposium is the first event of The Bible and Art Project, funded by the British Academy, but is the third in a series of conferences organised by Dr Martin O'Kane, of the Centre for the Bible and the Visual Imagination, and Professor John Harvey, of the Centre for Studies in the Visual Culture of Religion.
